The creative section includes the video, photo, graphics and print design teams. These teams will include multimedia editors proficient in photography, videography and graphics. The mission statements and role descriptions of the various roles are listed below.

Photo Mission Statement

The photo section will create interesting, original and entertaining content, both for other sections and standalone videos for a student audience.

Photo Editor

Editors assist with all sections, so it’s important to always know exactly what every section needs photographed every day. Editors must travel around London to take pictures, and be willing and able to frequently attend events like sports games, concerts and photo-shoots.

Editors are responsible for uploading content on a daily basis to our social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.), as well as uploading all photos to the website and formatting them for print.

Editors are also expected to take a leadership role in the creation of special issues. Editors should have excellent communication skills and be able to collaborate with all sections.

Expectations

  • Working knowledge of DSLR cameras
  • Ability and willingness to shoot anything and everything
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
  • Must be on call evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work quickly and creatively to make daily deadlines

Video Mission Statement

The video section will create interesting, original and entertaining content, both for other sections and standalone videos for a student audience.

Video Editor

Editors will be in charge of filming and editing all videos for The Gazette and Western TV. They should be able to create a narrative that flows, is cohesive, and is informative for our viewers. editors should be able to work collaboratively with different sections of The Gazette and Western TV to produce regular content. The editors’ schedule will vary based on current events and may be expected to work late evenings and on the weekend.

Editors should also research new equipment, software and technology in order to keep video production up to date. In keeping with this spirit of efficiency, editors should also develop a plan of action or best practices for workflow during productions.

They should be able to commit a minimum of 15 hours a week as well as maintain a presence within the office Monday through Friday and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

    • Knowledge of Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premier editing software a must

Graphics Mission Statement

The Graphics section creates a variety of engaging and informative graphics for web and print. They will support the writing sections and collaborate with the entire creative team to ensure engaging, accurate and timely graphics.

How we will fulfill this:

  • Maintain a focus on consistency in presentation and style of graphics
  • Collaborate with all other sections on a daily basis
  • Work with full-time composing staff to create attractive page layouts and web graphics
  • Experiment with delivery of information online through interactive web graphics and charts
  • Strive for quality and accuracy in the presentation of information, changing even minor details if they improve the final product
  • Ensure all space online and in print are being used to their maximum potential
  • Keep up-to-date with trends and innovation in the news graphics field and apply them wherever possible to The Gazette’s content

Graphics Editor

Role

The role of the Graphics Editor is to produce and facilitate engaging daily visual and interactive elements for online and print editions of the Gazette in a timely manner. This includes graphs, tables, charts etc.

Expectations

  • Adhere to the Gazette’s policies, including Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct, Editorial Procedure, Honoraria and Disciplinary policies
  • Fulfill the section’s Mission Statement
  • Manage, retain and groom volunteers
  • Layout
  • Meet deadlines (some of which can be demanding)
  • Plan ahead for long-term projects, such as features and special issues as these will take more time to create

Interactive Graphics Editor

Role

The role of the Interactive Graphics Editor is to produce and oversee for the Gazette’s online edition. This includes managing the graphics editors as well as producing necessary visual elements in a timely manner.
